pilates (pi-LA-tees)

 

Pilates is a unique form of body conditioning, originally known as “Contrology”, that was developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the 1920’s. The focus of Pilates is to build a strong core, specifically in those areas supporting the spine and abdomen. Pilates also focuses on improving flexibility throughout the body, resulting in restored height and spinal realignment. Joseph Pilates began the development of his technique with a series of mat exercises, done in a specific order, to create fluidity and most importantly, control. Soon after, he invented several pieces of equipment, known today as the Reformer, Cadillac (or Trapeze Table), Stability Chair, Ladder Barrel, Arc Barrel and Spine Corrector. The equipment uses springs for resistance, versus the commonly used weight, which allows more range of motion and connected movements

Pilates was discovered by many dancers in its early stages of development, and since then has spread across the country, now accommodating clients of all types, from the young athlete to the mature novice. Those who have discovered Pilates often find that once they have experienced the mind-body fitness connection, they are committed to it for life. Throughout the last 85 years, the Pilates world has grown dramatically and has advanced to the forefront of fitness, now widely included in basic physical therapy and physical training.
